Fetal echocardiography: 20 years of progress.

چکیده
Considerable advances in ultrasound technology and close collaboration between the specialties of paediatric cardiology and fetal medicine have resulted in the increasing ability to diagnose congenital heart disease before birth over the last two decades. Fetal cardiology diVers from paediatric cardiology not only in the spectrum of diseases seen, but also in the assessment of function because of the extended feto-placental circulation. Importantly, outcomes for specific lesions may diVer as extracardiac abnormalities and chromosomal defects may alter the prognosis of otherwise straightforward cardiac lesions such as tetralogy of Fallot. Historically the examination of the fetal heart and circulation developed separately, obstetricians using Doppler to examine the uteroplacental circulation to study the pathophysiology of pregnancy, 3 while cardiologists focused their attention on the morphological aspects of cardiac development using M mode and Doppler. 5 In today’s practice a comprehensive evaluation of the fetal cardiovascular system includes both structural and functional assessment using new technologies to monitor the progression of cardiac defects and to aid management decisions such as the need for early delivery, treatment of arrhythmia or for interventions such as balloon valvuloplasty of semilunar valve obstruction.

Comparison of Fetal Echocardiography for Fetal Cardiac Structure in Women with Gestational Diabetes Mellitus and Normal Pregnancies
BackgroundIncreased metabolic rate of hyperglycemia in gestational diabetes causes macrosomia, which can also affect the fetal heart. The thickness of the walls of the heart and its function in women with gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) can change over time before treatment. We aimed to evaluate fetal cardiac structure in terms of ventricular wall thickness and its function in women w...
متن کاملFetal Echocardiography Indications: A Single- Center Experience
Background Congenital heart disease (CHD) is the most common lethal congenital anomaly. Early diagnosis of CHD by fetal echocardiography based on maternal and fetal indications is important and lifesaving. The aim of study was to assess the referral aspects of pregnant women to pediatric cardiologist. Materials and Methods This was a retrospective cross-sectional study on 250 documents of refer...
متن کاملComparison between M-Mode and Doppler echocardiography in diagnosis
Introduction: Patent ductus arteriosus (PDA) is the persistence of a normal fetal structure between left pulmonary artery and descending aorta. Persistence of this fetal structure beyond 10 days of life is considered abnormal. In this study we compared M-Mode and Doppler echocardiography in diagnosis of PDA in children at Aliasghar Hospital in Zahedan and Children hospital in Bandar Abbas for...
متن کاملFetal Cardiac Anomalies; A Fetal Echocardiographic Study
= Abstract = Sewn years' experience of fetal echocardiography was reviewed to assess the diagnostic accuracy of fetal echocardiography, distribution of individual cardiac anomalies, and some practical problems of fetal echocardiography in Korea. A total of 737 fetuses IMlre examined and 45 confirmed and 20 unconfirmed cardiac structural anomalies IMlre identified. In general, fetal echocardiogr...
متن کاملHydrothorax treated in utero and monitored by fetal echocardiography.
Primary fetal hydrothorax is a relatively rare disorder, occurring in 1 out of 15,000 pregnancies, but connected with high perinatal mortality. In the event of little or no progress of the effusion or stable clinical course, conservative management seems to be the most appropriate course of action. In nearly half of the cases, a placement of only one pleuroamniotic shunt enables a total regress...
